A 16 year old asked Peter Diamandis – a famous entrepreneur – what was the most important thing he could do over summer vacation. Diamandis told him to find out what his passion was. Not what parents and teachers make you do. What you do all on your own because it’s exciting. Because this is where you should be spending your time.
As a kid I was obsessed with collecting baseball cards. Every afternoon I’d wait for the thunk of the newspaper at the front door. I’d take the Sports section to the kitchen table to memorize all the player stats. And over time I could spot trends about who was hot and who was struggling which gave me an edge when me and my friends traded cards.
I had a subscription to a price guide so I could add up what my collection was worth. It was exciting to watch this number grow. This was my passion: Money and investing. But I decided to get a degree in information systems and computer science. I worked in that field for years but it got boring and that’s why I started this blog. I was scared to do it, but it’s been one of the best things I’ve done.
You can start a blog too, it’s easy. Today you’re going to learn how to do it in just four steps:
- Domain Name
So take what you’re passionate about and let’s start a blog!
Your website will need to be put somewhere on the Internet, which is called hosting. Bluehost is a cheap hosting company that has plans starting at just $3.95 a month:
I’d recommend the “starter” plan, which also includes a free domain name, covered next.
2. Domain name
Picking your website, or domain name, is fun! What I did was brainstorm a bunch of ideas and then finally chose mreverydaydollar.com.
- Pick something flexible so you can grow into it
- Focus on branding and memorability
- Your own name is fine
After you select the “starter” plan in the previous step, there’s an option to check if the domain names you like are available. The page on Bluehost where you enter the domain name looks like this:
After you pick your domain name, you’ll enter your account information, and choose which billing plan you want. You can pay for hosting in larger yearly chunks to save money. There’s a prorated money-back guarantee, so it makes sense to pay more to save more.
I’d recommend adding the “Domain Privacy Protection” which shields your personal information–your name, address, and phone number–from being publicly displayed:
Once you’ve completed the sign-up process on Bluehost, then it’s time to install WordPress.
The most popular blogging platform in the world is WordPress, and installing it for your website is easy.
Log in to your account on Bluehost, then click on “Install WordPress”:
On the next page, under the free installation, click the “Install” button:
Click the “Check Domain” button (your domain name will be populated):
Check the terms and conditions box and then click the “Install Now” button:
When the installation completes, click on the “View Credentials” button and then write down the Admin URL, Username, and Password.
Type in your Admin URL, enter the Username and Password you copied down, and the click the “Log In” button:
You officially have your own blog now. How does it feel?
The way to make your blog sexy is with themes. There are tons of great free themes, and you can browse through them here.
If you want to make an upfront investment in a premium theme – the benefits are regular upgrades, support, and an engaged community – then I recommend Genesis.
